The Mystery of Lent
Why Forty Days?
Let us remember the forty days and forty nights of the deluge (Num. xiv. 33) sent by God in His anger when He repented that He had made man and destroyed the entire human race with the exception of one family. Consider how the Hebrew people, in punishment for their ingratitude, wandered forty years in the desert before they were permitted to enter the promised land. (Gen. vii. 12) Listen to God commanding Ezekiel to lie forty days on his right side, as a figure of the siege that was to bring destruction on Jerusalem. (Ezechiel iv. 6)…the Son of God, having become Man for our salvation and wishing to subject Himself to the pain of fasting, chose the number of forty days.
The Whole Church Offering Sacrifice for Sins
The institution of Lent is thus brought before us with everything that can impress the mind with its solemn character and with its power to appease God and purify our souls. Look beyond the little world that surrounds us and see how the entire Christian universe is, at this very time, offering forty days’ penance as a sacrifice of propitiation to the offended Majesty of God. Let us hope that, as in the case of the Ninivites, He will mercifully accept this year’s offering of our atonement and pardon us our sins.
Lent: A Christian Warfare
The number of our days of Lent is a holy mystery. Let us now learn from the liturgy, in what light the Church views her children during these forty days. The Church considers her children an immense army, fighting day and night against spiritual enemies. We remember how, on Ash Wednesday, she calls Lent a Christian warfare. In order that we may have that newness of life that will make us worthy to sing once more our Alleluia, we must conquer our three enemies: the devil, the flesh, and the world.

El misterio de la Cuaresma
¿Por qué cuarenta días?
Recordemos los cuarenta días y cuarenta noches del diluvio (Núm. xiv. 33) enviado por Dios en su ira cuando se arrepintió de haber hecho al hombre y destruido a toda la raza humana con la excepción de una familia. Considere cómo el pueblo hebreo, en castigo por su ingratitud, vagó cuarenta años en el desierto antes de que se les permitiera entrar en la tierra prometida. (Gen. vii. 12) Escuche a Dios ordenando a Ezequiel que se acueste cuarenta días a su lado derecho, como una figura del asedio que iba a traer destrucción sobre Jerusalén. (Ezequiel iv. 6)… el Hijo de Dios, habiéndose hecho hombre para nuestra salvación y deseando someterse al dolor del ayuno, eligió el número de cuarenta días.
Toda la Iglesia ofreciendo sacrificio por los pecados
La institución de la Cuaresma se presenta así ante nosotros con todo lo que puede impresionar la mente con su carácter solemne y con su poder para apaciguar a Dios y purificar nuestras almas. Mire más allá del pequeño mundo que nos rodea y vea cómo todo el universo cristiano está, en este mismo momento, ofreciendo cuarenta días de penitencia como sacrificio de propiciación a la Majestad ofendida de Dios. Esperemos que, como en el caso de los Ninavitas, Él aceptará misericordiosamente la ofrenda de nuestra expiación en este año y nos perdonará nuestros pecados.
Cuaresma: Una guerra cristiana
El número de nuestros días de Cuaresma es un misterio santo. Aprendamos ahora de la liturgia a qué luz ve la Iglesia a sus hijos durante estos cuarenta días. La Iglesia considera a sus hijos un ejército inmenso, que lucha día y noche contra enemigos espirituales. Recordamos cómo, el Miércoles de Ceniza, ella llama a la Cuaresma una guerra cristiana. Para que podamos tener esa novedad de vida que nos hará dignos de cantar una vez más nuestro Aleluya, debemos conquistar a nuestros tres enemigos: el diablo, la carne y el mundo.
